Modern Description: Part of the moat, wall, and a gate complex of what was presumably the Themistoklean wall are under the propylos of the precinct of Olympian Zeus. The fortification used huge limestone column drums and other blocks from an unfinished Doric predecessor of the Olympieion temple (ca. 515 BCE). The drums have been crudely sawn in quarters. The gate, lying outside the later city wall, has been identified on weak grounds as the Hippades (Cavalry) Gate or Aegeus Gate. A road led to the sanctuaries of Ilissos, Pagkrates and Hymettus
[Judith Binder: Hippades Gate: in the Themistoklean City Wall: IG II² 463 line 128; the gate east of the Dipylon Gate was [correctly] identified in Barbie du Bocageʼs plan of 1784, Travlos, J. 1971, fig. 53 = Gate at Leokoriou and Dipylou Sts.; [securely] identified as the Hippades Gate, F.
