Modern Description: Remains of a substantial 2nd c. CE Roman bath, with patches of mosaic floor, were excavated under and E of the church. Some mosaic and walls are visible in the crypt. Inscriptions date the church to 1044 or earlier. Monastic buildings associated with the church were destroyed in a 1701 earthquake. The semi-ruined church was bought by the Russian state in 1847 and refurbished for use by the Russian community in Athens.
