Modern Description: Middle Byz church at Adrianou and Ag. Philippou St., a simple 3-aisle basilica in ruins in 1830 and rebuilt from the foundations in altered form in 1866. In the Apocryphal Acts of Philip, (Act 2), the Apostle visited Athens, lectured the assembled philosophers, and worked various miracles. They sent a letter to the High Priest Ananias in Jerusalem. He came to Athens with an enormous retinue. After trying and failing to reason with Ananias, Philip asked the earth to open and swallow him as far as the ankles. The earth obliged, but Ananias remained unshakable and was gradually swallowed up by the abyss, reaching Hades alive but leaving behind his high-priestly uniform, which fluttered off and disappeared. Philip stayed in Athens for two years, appointed a priest and presbyter, and went off to evangelize Parthia. We should probably not take this account too literally. That said, digging under the church would quite possibly reveal interesting monuments, perhaps the Leokoreion.
