Modern Description: The Prytaneion, headquarters of the Prytanes, played a key role in Athenian civil life, including as a dining hall for hosting distinguished visitors and offering free meals to the city's Olympic victors, etc. A 2006 Hesperia piece by Geoffrey Schmalz argues that was located under the modern square of Agia Aikaterini church in Plaka. Part of an imposing colonnade still stands there with Hellenistic and Roman architectural elements but with earlier foundations. A dedication to Hestia, the goddess of the hearth and hospitality, was found by the church. (http://www.ascsa.edu.gr/pdf/uploads/hesperia/25067975.pdf)
