Modern Description: Ancient Lousoi was an important city of Arcadic Azania, with a sanctuary of pan-hellenic significance. It is located in the southwestern flank of Mt. Helmos, in the valley of Soudena, between the ancient cities of Kynaitha and Kleitor. The city and temple were first identified by G. Papandreou in 1886 and in 1889-99 W. Reichel and A. Wilhelm excavated the temple of Artemis and the most important buildings of the sanctuary, but not the city. Later, from 1981 onwards, the Austrian Archaeological Istitute - under the direction of V. Mitsopoulou-Leon and G. Ladstätter - has continued the excavation of the temple and its environs, as well as the city, where the ruins of another temple and a Hellenistic stoa have come to light.
