Modern Description: The Cave of the Lakes lies at an altitude of 800m., 2km from the village Kastria. The cave is in fact a subterranean river, ca. 2100m long, which has created three distinct levels. The only accessible part was the first level, about 80m. long. Man-made deposits (cremations, hearths, floor levels, pottery, food remains, tools and loom weights) indicate the continuous, though not uninterrupted, habitation of the cave from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age.
