Modern Description: "The name ""Halai"" implies saltworks, distinguishing this deme from Aixone, further N and inland. Indeed there was in Voula a shallow lagoon suitable for the purpose. An extensive Mycenaean chamber tomb cemetery (1500-1100 BC) has been excavated at Alyki, Voula (Trachones). The finds are housed in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
Excavations at the sites of Kalamboka and Pigadakia, Voula have brought to light remains of small sanctuaries, streets and houses with storerooms, baths and towers, as well as funerary monuments. This area (intersection of Athinaidos and Leof. Varis) seems to have been the centre of the rural deme of Halae Aixonides. On the adjacent height of Kastraki toward Vari are ruins of houses and a Hellenistic fort (early 3rd century BC). An excavation on Athinaidos and Mistras may reveal the deme center.
