Modern Description: The important sanctuary of Artemis Mounychia on the promontory above Mikrolimani (Tourkolimano) is now essentially gone, except for part of a round tower visible in the gardens of the Yacht Club. It suffered from having the mansion of Alexandros Koumoundouros, a 19th c. Greek prime minister, built atop the promontory, and then by the construction of the Yacht Club in the 1930s. Brief, partial, and little-published excavations revealed interesting votives, some on display in the Piraeus Museum. They date from the 10th c. BCE and continue into the Roman period, and resemble those from the sanctuary of Brauronian Artemis.
