Modern Description: Important evidence of early prehistoric settlements has been found just to the north of Zagora on the promontory of Stróphilos, where one of the largest Neolithic settlements (5th millennium BC) in the Aegean has been brought to light. The settlement was protected by substantial walls; excavation has revealed the bases of large buildings, and of a very early sanctuary comprising a large hall (c. 100 sq.m), with a circular stone construction at its centre. Perhaps the most significant find from the site has been the variety of shallow-carved rock-art of the late 5th and early 4th millennia BC, which is found on many of the blocks and flagstones and depicts ships, animals and various abstract designs. This, together with the quality of the artefacts found, gives a very clear sense of both the sophistication of the culture to be found here so early, as well as of the importance of this stretch of the coast of Andros in the Aegean world of the Chalcolithic period (4500-3200 BC). Access is officially restricted.
