Modern Description: The ancient Agora of Andros, under excavation (2019) by Lydia Palaiokrassa of the University of Athens, is reached by taking marked path 9 from the bottom of the steep paved road down from the museum. Bear NE (rather than W toward the beach). Shortly after doubling back to cross the rema, a low wooden gate on the left side of the trail opens onto the trail to the excavations (a 15-minute walk from the road, moderately steep). The agoa is a flat area on two E-W terraces, bounded N and south by monumental stoas. The N stoa is dated by a plate in the dedicatory pyre to the first half of the 2nd c. BCE. The front steps of the stoa are preserved to a length of 50 m. Excavated by the University of Athens (L Kontoleon and currently L. Palaiokrassa., ongoing 2019). At the W end of the stoa a road runs N uphill. Beside that, a monumental propylon and other buildings.
