Modern Description: Though bravely signposted from the main Markopoulo-Lavrio road turnoff as far as the tiny hamlet of Avrokastro, the archaeological site itself is unsignposted, and the goat tracks leading to the 315 m summit are painfully overgrown (2018). A rubble-built circuit wall, preserved height 10-90 cm, traceable around much of the summit, is thought by Gene Vanderpool (in "A South Attic Miscellany," Miscellanea Graeca 1975) to date from the 2nd c. BC. and possibly to be connected with a revolt of the Lavrion mining slaves. There are few sherds, plus small obsidian flakes from the Neolithic through Middle Helladic. The view is good, apart from the recent sanitary landfill -- the signage for Ovriokastro was part of an effort to block the landfill due to its proximity to the antiquities.
