Modern Description: 3 km south of Batsi, the coast road passes the plateau of Ypsilí on the seaward side. The archaeological site here (currently closed for excavation and restoration) has revealed another Geometric period settlement of the 9th & 8th centuries BC, comparable and contemporary with that at Zagora. The wall of the acropolis is clearly visible and has been cleared from the front side on the east, facing the road. To the south are the foundations of a number of dwellings. In the centre of the plateau circumscribed by the wall are the stone foundations of an early 6th century BC temple of megaron plan: the stone ‘furniture' uncovered by archaeologists in the sanctum (wall-benches and tables) has given rise to the suggestion – unusual, given the position and site – that this was a place of chthonic cult, possibly of Demeter. Perhaps the best idea of the layout of the whole site can be obtained by going a little way up the road to Alikandro and Aprovato (junction opposite site) and viewing the area from above.
