Modern Description: For Leto ... loosed her girdle in Zoster in Attica and gave a name to the place; and walking ever to the east under the guidance of Athena Pronoias, from the tip of Attica boarding the islands, she stopped at Delos and gave birth to gods for the city, Artemis and Apollo Patroos. (Aelius Aristides Panathenaikos). The Sanctuary of Apollo Zoster was excavated in 1926-1927 and is located at the narrow point of the promontory of the popular beach resort of Vouliagmeni near Athens. The temple, built in the classical period, is a fairly simple structure, 11 x 6 meters. The floor was covered with marble slabs, and at a distance of 6.75 m. before the temple stands the altar. Some time after its construction, the temple was surrounded by an arcade, which gave it the appearance of a peristyle temple with 4 x 6 columns. Inscriptions indicate that the shrine was administered by the deme Halai Aixonides (Salt Fields of Aixone). The site is fenced, within the resort beach enclosure, but entry is often permitted.
