Modern Description: Tretos is the name of the mountain on the W side of the main road between Kleonaia-Corinthia and Argolis. The mountain was called Tretos ('perforated';) because there was a ravine at its foot. It was in that ravine that the Nemean lion had its den (Hes. Theog. 327-31; Apollod. 2.5.1; Diod. Sic. 4.11; Paus. 2.15.2). The modern road and the railway follow the ancient route through the pass, now called Dervenakia. (J. R. WISEMAN)
