Modern Description: A 4th c. bouleuterion and archaic altar at Otomatik tepe just E of Guzelcamli are linked by inscriptions to the Panionion, Ionian federal sanctuary to Helikonian Poseidon. Hans Lohmann has asserted 2005 that this was the later sanctuary, while the original archaic Panionion was at a site he discovered on the flank of Catallar Tepe NW of Priene, with foundations of a 6th c. BC temple. Lohmann believes the fortified acropolis beside it was ancient Melia, a faintly-attested Carian city. Both identifications have been challenged by Alexander Herda, who sees Otomatik tepe as the correct site and identifies Catallar Tepe with an ancient Mykalessos.
