The centre of the ancient city and its acropolis extend over Velatouri hill. Of significance is the excavated theatre (5th century BC), with a rectangular orchestra originally and an elliptical one later, and stone seats. The town plan is close packed with irregular building of houses and smiths' workshops (many building remains from the 7th-4th century BC). A small temple, perhaps dedicated to Hygieia, next to which are stoas with benches. The large Doric temple (late 5th century BC), may have been a Telesterion for the cult of Demeter and Kore.
At Kalyvia Thorikou there are remains of an Early Christian three-aisled basilica. The later church of the Taxiarch stands in the position of the middle aisle.
