Modern Description: The village of Kato Belesi, to which the fork in the road from Argos leads, has been renamed Lyrkeia due to the belief that remains of a polygonal wall and pottery identify the nearby hill of Palaiokastraki as the site of the prehistoric city of Lyrcea and the Lyrceum of historical times. More recent scholarship puts Lyrcea near some Mycenaean tombs excavated close to the village of Schinochori.
At the site of Pigadaki, now difficult to locate, a brief excavation in the 1960s revealed an Early Christian building, perhaps a basilica, with mosaic decoration.
