Modern Description: The strategically important area of the cape was a permanent base for the Athenian navy. On a low terrace the peribolos of the temenos of Athena with ruins of the goddess's Ionic temple (second half of 5th century BC) and an altar. A small temple in the same temenos is associated with the cult of the hero Phrontis.
On the summit of the promontory stand the columns of the marble Doric temple of Poseidon. Although the god's cult is attested from the 7th century BC, it seems that building of the first temple commenced c. 490 BC, and of the extant one c. 440 BC. The temenos includes the sacred propylon, two stoas and areas for accommodation. At the NW tip of the cape the neosoikoi (íåώóïéêïé) were found with two places for storing ships. Finds from the sanctuary (Archaic kouroi, parts of the temple frieze etc.) are exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
The deme of Sunium belonged to the Leontis tribe and the ruins of a rectangular agora with shops and a bath, sections of a street and houses excavated beside the Pasha harbour probably belong to it.
