Modern Description: The ancient city of Epidaurus was the port of the Epidaurian chora (territory) towards the Aegean. It colonized Cos, Nisyros, Astypalaea and Aegina. Harbour installations are preserved submerged in the sea. There is a polygonal wall on the acropolis, a theatre of the 4th-3rd century BC and close to the site of the agora there are Roman houses. On the height W of the harbour are remains of a sanctuary of Artemis which functioned from the Archaic period.
On the Nisi peninsula at Palia Epidavros, on the site of the ancient acropolis, ruins of a single-aisle vaulted-roofed basilica dedicated to the Virgin. It was perhaps a fortress chapel in the 6th century. Excavations carried out by the University of Athens (ongoing 2021) have revealed a substantial 4th c. BCE fountain house and Roman stoa, part of the agora, just outside the ancient theater.
