Modern Description: An important fortified Mycenaean citadel between Mycenae and Tiryns. Its mighty Cyclopean walls can only be compared with those of the aforementioned sites. The city developed on stepped terraces, had guardhouses beside its two gates, organized magazines, workshops and buildings with wall-paintings. It was destroyed by fire and possibly an earthquake in the late 13th century BC.
