Modern Description: Well-preserved church, formerly dated to 1149 on basis of a founder's inscription by Leon the Orthodox bishop of Nauplia and Argos, but see the important article in Hesperia 84.3 by Guy Sanders, who argues that the inscription was originally in an earlier church, and this church should be redated, like the one at Merbaka, to the late 13th century. The monastery has a sacred spring (ancient blocks), identified as ancient Kanathos, sacred to Hera. Byzantine documentation for the nunnery, converted to a monastery survives, in English translation, in Talbot, A.-M. 2000. “Areia: Memorandum and Typikon of Leo, Bishop of Nauplia, for the Monastery of the Mother of God in Areia,” in Byzantine Monastic Foundation Documents: A Complete Translation of the Surviving Founders’ Typika and Testaments (Dumbarton Oaks Studies 35), ed. J. Thomas and A. C. Hero, vol. 3, Washington, D.C., pp. 954–972.
