Modern Description: Remains of ancient Epitalio, a significant city of Triphylia of the 5th century BCE, survive south of the Alpheus, near the mouth on the Ionian Sea. The coastline has advanced significantly to the W. Rescue excavations were conducted in the 1960s during construction of an irrigation system. The remains of Roman baths and a pottery kiln (2nd-4th century CE) were discovered, built on the foundations of buildings of the Hellenistic period, including a large public building, possibly a temple. The finds included a Roman milestone reused in a wall. The Latin inscription dates it to the emperor Trajan, with a distance measure of 9 Roman miles (13.5 km) but without naming the starting point, which is possibly the port of Pheia near Katakolo, or else Olympia. The milestone indicates the existence of a main road passing near the point of discovery. It is exhibited among other notable finds in the Archaeological Museum of Pirgos.
