Modern Description: An Ionian city that belonged to the Milesian state. Its name presupposes the existence of a defensive wall (teichos). Known from epigraphic testimonia and mainly from the seated statue, ex-voto of its archon Chares to Apollo Didymaios in the 6th entury BC (British Museum, London). Its site is identified with the antiquities uncovered on the Kazikli peninsula. At the site of Iskele there are rock-cut, arch-roofed tombs, as well as a large arch-roofed mausoleum. On Doğanbeleni hill at the end of the peninsula is a fortified enceinte of the 5th century BC.
