Modern Description: Remains of an Archaic defensive wall on the shores of the Hermione peninsula. The harbour of the ancient city was located in the N smallest bay of the peninsula. In the E area of the peninsula foundations of the peripteral temple of Poseidon (the city's most important cult) or Athena, of Early Classical times. W of Pron hill, on Mount Cocygium (Profitis Ilias) there is a sanctuary of Zeus.
In Miaouli street, next to the primary school, ruins of a large Early Christian building complex, including a three-aisled basilica with many additions (4th or 5th century, renovated in 6th century) have come to light. Mosaic pavements with representations of birds, geometric and vegetal motifs. A 6th-century complex, perhaps the bishop's residence or a combination of this and a baptistery, has been excavated N of the basilica.
