Modern Description: The Sarantapotamos river valley was the main ancient and medieval route from Tegea to Lakonia, and the one Pausanias would have used. He calls it the Alpheios, apparently believing (erroneously) that it fed the Alpheios springs after disappearing into a katavothra near Takas (?). The river course in the Tegea plain has changed substantially since antiquity.
