Modern Description: The sacred grove of the Karneiasion, connected with Apollo Karneia, is a major sanctuary of the Messenians. It had a sacred spring, a temple, etc. The spring is probably that of Divari, S of modern Polichni, which is built with ancient blocks. Roman material is found nearby. An elaborate mystery cult is documented by the so-called Andania inscription, built into a modern church in Konstantinoi but allegedly found W of the Divari spring. One of several archaic/mythical Oichalias was here, and ancient Andania was nearby.
