Modern Description: The city was founded on a hill during Mausolos' synoecism and included the inhabitants of Cindye. It had a closed harbour and developed in Hellenistic times and the Roman era. Part of the defensive wall from the 4th century BC and Hellenistic times, ruins of temples, two theatres and other buildings have survived. An ancient cemetery to the N of the city.
