Modern Description: Small town in Caria 12 km SW of Mugla, part of the subject Rhodian Peraea. It was one of a chain of strongpoints held by Orontobates, the successor of the Hekatomnids, in 334-333 B.C.; the others were Myndos, Kaunos, and Kallipolis (Arr. Anab. 2.5.7). It is listed also by Ptolemy (5.2.16) and by Stephanos of Byzantium s.v. Thera was apparently a member of the Chrysaoric League (IG XII, 5.977). The site is determined by inscriptions found on the spot, but nothing remains apart from ancient stones and foundations unearthed by the local inhabitants. (G. E. BEAN)
