Modern Description: N of Halicarnassus (Bodrum), near the village of Bitez which alliterates the ancient name. This Lelegian city successfully confronted the Persian incursions into Caria in the 6th century BC and during the Ionian revolt (499 BC). Mausolos included it in the synoecism of Halicarnassus (4th century BC), but the earlier city was not abandoned. Today the defensive wall of the acropolis still stands to an appreciable height, contiguous SE with the fortified enceinte of the city, constructed of dry-stone masonry reinforced with towers of more regular masonry. Characteristic Lelegian rock-cut tombs-tumuli in the region.
