Modern Description: A fading red sign on the N side of the upper road from Naxos chora to Angidia shows a dirt road heading NE up the hill to the 2004-8 excavations by the University of Athens at the EC basilica of Agios Stephanos. Fenced but unlocked (2019). The original building was a sizable (12.8 x 23 m) three-aisle basilica, replaced by a smaller Middle Byzantine church and a final phase with Venetian-period burials. The church, which sits on the shoulder of the hill with an ample view, incorporates many ancient marbles. A fenced corridor leads uphill to the right to a stretch of the Naxos aqueduct in its Roman phases, with a battered but still legible information panel. The white domed church on the paved road below is a Venetian church of the Annunciation, with an interesting relief of the Lion of St. Mark flanked by heraldic emblems.
