Modern Description:
The site is accessible by a rocky but reasonably safe jeep track that turns back to the left, 250 m beyond the Nedontas bridge, from the road to Nedousa. Fine views of the gorge. This track parallels the mostly vanished ancient track from Sparta to Messenia. At about 5 km from the paved road, at the saddle, there is a wide spot for parking, a built cistern left of the track, and a red paint blotch (right) marking the unsignposted path to the invisible chapel of the Panagia Kapsocherovolousa, about 5 minutes climb on a mostly clear footpath. A number of large worked limestone blocks indicate the presence of the site. Ancient marbles built into the chapel. Small finds inscribed Λιμνᾶτις Ἄρτεμις show this was the ancient border sanctuary of Artemis Limnatis at Limnai, on a key route between Lakonia and Messenia. The area, a set of upland vallies, ancient Limnai, was populated until the mid-20th century, and now has one resident shepherd, Giannis P., who also works at the Thouria excavations. The dogs are his, said to be harmless. Wikidata ID: Q107161014 Trismegistos Geo: 38169 DARE: 46283
