Modern Description: The longer approach to Mt. Zas from the north, leaving from the road to Danakós, close by the church of Aghia Marina, is more gradual (90 minutes). Two rock-cut boundary inscriptions, one found in 1999 near Agia Marina church, the other long known, carved on a boulder beside the trail shortly before the Levgasa well about 0.6 km from the church, attest to a sacred area set apart on the ridge for Zeus Melosios. ["ὅρος Διὸς Μηλωσίου"]. Presumably a Zeus of Flocks. One possiblity is that a dispute over grazing rights of two neighboring communities to a debatable level area on the ridgeline was resolved by reserving the land for Zeus and barring both communities from pasturing sheep there.
