Modern Description: The road ends at the spacious, natural harbour of Panormos Bay (14 km), which cuts into the empty hills of the island's north coast. The small strip of fertile land encircled by the sweep of hills is punctuated by the solitary domed chapel of Aghios Nikolaos, built on the site of earlier settlement which goes as far back as prehistoric times. At the southern extremity of the bay are the remains of stone huts and pens, a couple of subterranean cave-shelters and a rock cut ‘cistern' for water. Archaeological evidence has shown that this inlet was inhabited both in the Bronze Age, and through Classical and Roman times.
