Modern Description: The church of Aghios Basilios occupies the saddle of a headland which divides the bay of Livadia at its southern end and stands beside the road towards Aghios Konstantinos. The modern chapel is set in the midst of the much larger floor area of the Early Christian basilica; the mosaics are visible to the south side. Astypalaia, like Kalymnos and Cos, its closest neighbours to the east, appears to have had a large, rich and productive Early Christian community judging by the considerable number of decorated churches whose remains have been found on the island.
