Modern Description: The Kalamakia cave was excavated in 1993-2006 by the Ephoreia of Paleoanthropology and Speleology (Greek Ministry of Culture) and the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (Paris). Now on the shoreline of the Mani (W Lakonia), the site would once have dominated a small coastal plain rich in fauna. The excavated strata date to between 100,000 and 39,000 years before present and have yielded Mousterian stone tools, animal bones documenting a varied meat diet, and human remains including 10 Neanderthal teeth and other fragments. This cave is so far the best-documented Neanderthal presence in Greece. Not open to visitors.
