Modern Description: Twenty kilometres southeast of Santorini, and clearly visible in good weather conditions, is the steep and uninhabited island of Christiana—Ancient Ascania. Evidence of a settlement of the 3rd millennium BC has come to light on the island, including a cylindrical, underground construction in the form of a well, carefully lined in dry stone. The island is remote and difficult of access: the early human presence there raises interesting questions about sea-craft and sailing skills in the Early Bronze Age, a subject about which we know lamentably little.
