Modern Description: Habitation at the site is attested from the 5th century BC. In one view building remains from the Roman era (aqueduct, thermae, peribolos) belong to an ancient city called Methymna. On Troulli-Rokkas hill, cuttings for the foundation of ancient houses indicate a settlement that will have been the outport for the ancient city at Nopigeia. The Byzantine church of Agios Giorgos Nopigeion is built in the ruins of a Roman bath. Note that the name Methymna is known only from one late source Aelian's Characteristics of Animals (14.20), and the Loeb editor therefore corrects the reading to Rethymna, causing the name (though not the associated antiquities) to disappear).
