Modern Description: The second city of this name in Crete, in the homonymous gulf (present Myrtilos gulf). Possibly a harbour of Polyrrhenia in Roman times, when it was in its heyday. An ancient breakwater and houses with mosaic floors (2nd-4th century) mainly in the area of New Square. Buildings for baths and public thermae, a water supply and a sewerage system, and remains of an aqueduct. Remains of a theatre or an amphitheatre. Temples, perhaps of Dionysos or Zeus Ammon and Apollo. To the NE of the city, the Roman cemetery with rock-cut and built tombs. On Selli hill, W of the present town, building remains from the 4th-3rd century BC. The Classical and Hellenistic city was probably located on this site and then moved to the area of its harbour.
Early Christian marble reliefs in the local archaeological collection bear witness to the existence of a basilica hereabouts.
