Modern Description: On a hill slope NW of Anogeia, near the present village of Axos. A flourishing city in the 8th, 7th and 6th centuries BC. A temple of Apollo or Athena of that time on the fortified acropolis. A Hellenistic/Roman temple of Aphrodite. Finds from the city are housed in the Rethymnon Archaeological Museum. The cemetery is on the SE side of the acropolis and there are Late Hellenistic houses on the NE. A sanctuary of Demeter at the site of Gerakaro.
The cemetery church of Saint John is built on the site of an Early Christian basilica. There was perhaps a second basilica on the site of the chapel of Saints Eleutherios and Modestos. Remnants of fortifications from Roman and Early Byzantine times.
