Modern Description: In antiquity the present islet was a peninsula on which an extensive Minoan settlement with harbour developed. A rich cemetery of Early Minoan rectangular tombs with the plan and dimensions of rooms (2600-2100 BC). The grave goods of exceptional art point to the emergent ruling class of Minoan Crete and reveal influences from the Sumerians in Mesopotamia. The finds are exhibited in the Aghios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum.
A Roman settlement (2nd-4th century AD) is nowadays visible on the island and there are contemporary piscinae on the opposite coast.
