Modern Description: A precipitous, naturally fortified site 1200 m asl, with a commanding view of the whole of NE Crete. There was a peak sanctuary here in the Middle Minoan period (2200-1550 BC). The settlement that developed between 1200 and 1100 BC is attributed to refugees who moved up from the lowlands. House complexes, a tripartite 'megaroid' building with hearth and a sanctuary with clay figurines of the Minoan goddess with raised arms have been excavated. The finds are exhibited in the Herakleion Archaeological Museum. Possibly an Archaic sanctuary near the Vitzilovrysi spring.
