Modern Description: An important cult centre in Minoan Crete. Most probably identified as the Dictaean Cave in which Zeus was born and raised. According to another viewpoint, the Dictaean Cave was located E of Hierapytna (Hierapetra). A place of worship from the Early Minoan period (2800-2300 BC) into the Roman era. A rectangular altar and an irregular peribolos in the antechamber. There is a small lake in the large cavern and an impressive stalactite known as the 'mantle of Zeus'. Countless votive offerings of pilgrims, mainly figurines, weapons and double axes. The finds are in the Herakleion Archaeological Museum and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
