Modern Description: On the coast of the Libyan sea, at the exit of the Samaria gorge. Strong fortifications, a sanctuary of Apollo Tarraios and a cemetery. A Classical settlement at present Pano Aghia Roumeli. An open-air sanctuary of Archaic to Late Roman times in the Samaria gorge.
On the site of the church of the Mother of God (Theotokos) there is a large Early Christian three-aisled basilica, with walls 3 m high. Mosaic floors are also preserved. Sculptures from an ancient temple in secondary use.
