Modern Description: Outport of Phaestus, and of Gortyn in Hellenistic times. Part of the ancient city is submerged, while the remainder extends in the area of the present settlement. An acropolis to the S of the present harbour. Columns of an ancient temple to the SE. On the outskirts of the city, rock-cut tombs and cemeteries of the 5th century BC to the 7th century AD.
The small Byzantine church of the Virgin occupies the site of an Early Christian basilica, columns of which are preserved. Travellers report a mosaic floor with inscription on the same site.
