Modern Description: Aphaca was the site of the cult of Aphrodite Urania in the late antiquity. It is located at the modern village of Afqa near Mt Lebanon, below a huge grotto in the cliff face with springs feeding the river Adonis [modern Nahr Ibrahim]. Despite literary evidence that Constantine the Great destroyed the Hellenistic temple, it was repaired and may have continued functioning up to the VI century AD. A church was later built at the site. Tumbled blocks from the former temple are visible, in bad condition after centuries of being mined as a source of building material.
