Modern Description: Under excavations since 2007 by P.J. Cherian et al., the Pattanam site in Kerala, 25 km N of Kochi, has revealed quantities of Roman-period ceramics, including oil, wine, and garum amphoras, terra sigillata pottery, and glass/stone trade beads. The name Pattanam seems to be a survival of an ancient word meaning trading point. The site, which lacks major monuments, has been associated with Mouziris, called an emporion by Ptolemaeus (and literary sources. Attempts have been made, and fiercely rebuked, to associate the site (without evidence) as the entry point for Kerala's early Christianization.
